From three-level go-kart tracks to retractable SkyDomes and a Magic Carpet, Rebecca Rachel Wong finds out the groundbreaking features that upcoming ships have in store.

Norwegian Prima's Prima Speedway

Norwegian Cruise Line

NCL’s Norwegian Prima will boast the largest and first ever three-level go-kart racetrack at sea. The Prima Speedway stretches 1,378 feet and features 14 sharp turns, with a section offering ocean views.

Adrenaline-seekers will also love The Drop, which NCL claims is the “world’s first free-fall dry slide” offered by a cruise line. This 10-story plunge slide will offer one of the highest G-forces of any comparable thrill rides in the cruise industry.

The ship sails to Northern Europe and the UK in summer 2022, before a fall/winter itinerary in Bermuda and The Caribbean.

Wonder of the Seas' Suite Neighbourhood

Royal Caribbean

This will be the first Oasis-class ship to have eight neighborhoods, including the all-new Suite Neighborhood. The keycard-accessible area boasts a suite-only restaurant and an elevated Suite Sun Deck with a plunge pool, bar and loungers.

Another new addition is The Vue, a cantilevered pool bar. For the little ones, the all-new Playscape is an outdoor playground with underwater-themed slides, climbing walls, games and puzzles.

Wonder debuts in Florida in March 2022 and will sail in the Caribbean and Europe.

Global Dream's Dream Park at the Piere

Dream Cruises

When Global Dream debuts next year, the vessel will have a 4,700 passenger capacity.

She’ll also have Dream Park at the Pier, the first-ever theme park at sea. Inside the park is the Space Cruiser − the world’s longest roller coaster at sea. Travelling up to 60 km/h, riders get to experience the feeling of flying over the sea, with an integrated throttle to control the ride’s speed along the 303m track.

Other features of the theme park include an inflatable bouncy obstacle course and a human gyroscope ride.

Global Dream’s itineraries have yet to be revealed but will likely include Asia sailings and global voyages to Australia, New Zealand, the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.

Celebrity Edge

Celebrity Cruises

Launched in 2018, Celebrity Edge isn’t a new ship. But there are some revolutionary features to look forward to when she arrives Down Under in 2023.

The ship’s Magic Carpet is the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform at a height of up to 13 storeys over the sea.

The transformable platform serves multiple purposes, such as being a bar, live music venue, embarkation platform or restaurant extension.

The ship will have six to 13-night sailings departing Sydney and Auckland, between December 2023 and April 2024.

Disney Wish's Stat Wars and Marvel-themed spaces

Disney Cruises

The first new ship from Disney Cruise Line in a decade, Disney Wish has revealed brand-new adult-only spaces. One of which is the much-hyped Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge. This upscale bar is designed like a luxurious spaceship, with interactive tasting experiences and beverages inspired by the movie’s destinations like Batuu, Tatooine and Mustafar.

There are also new themed-restaurants with a theatrical dining experience. These include a Worlds of Marvel restaurant and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure with Nordic-influenced cuisine.

Disney Wish sails to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island Castaway Cay from Florida in June 2022.

Arvia’s retractable SkyDome

P&O Cruises UK

P&O UK’s new Excel-class ship has unveiled a stunning retractable glass roof above its pool area. A first for P&O Cruises, the SkyDome has been designed to maximise time in the sunshine in the warm climates Arvia will visit.

The new feature complements Arvia’s relaxed pool environment by day. Come evening, the pool area will feature live music, production shows, DJ sets and blockbuster movies al fresco on SeaScreen.

Arvia commences her Caribbean maiden season next winter, homeporting in Barbados and Antigua from January to March 2023.
