Informal and engaged

Life onboard a Hurtigruten expedition cruise is famously relaxed. This atmosphere is reflected in the casual dress code, where there’s no need to change for dinner. The helpful and knowledgeable Expedition Teams love to share their experiences, and make a point of being available throughout the journey to welcome your questions. You’ll discover that striking up conversations with your fellow explorers feels as natural as the landscapes around you. Hurtigruten crew and guests all share a love of the natural world and a strong sense of community.

Stunning views and good company

The Explorer lounge and bar with floor-to-ceiling windows and deep armchairs offers magnificent views of the scenery. This is also the social hub of the ship, where you can always find a stimulating conversation to join. The Explorer lounge and bar serves a tempting range of snacks, pastries and refreshments throughout the day.

Choose active or relaxing sea days

Sea days are great for participating in lectures to learn about the area you’re exploring. In the Science Center you can also take part in projects and study samples taken on your journey, read about destinations in the library or receive photography tips from our professional onboard photographer. But sea days are also about relaxation. Enjoy finding one of the many cosy nooks around the ship to relax in, read or simply admire the spectacular landscapes. Hurtigruten’s new ships have hot tubs, a pool, sauna, gym and a Wellness Center. Feel free to soak tired muscles, work out, or take an invigorating stroll on deck and breathe in the fresh sea air.

Sleep tight

At the end of the day, you’ll look forward to retiring to your comfortable, Scandinavian-designed cabin or suite. Snuggle under soft duvets and fine linen for a good night’s sleep.

The Fleet

Since 1893, the Hurtigruten ships have been a hallmark of the Norwegian coast. Today, the ships sail to the Arctic and Antarctica, and many destinations in between. On each ship you will find modern facilities carefully blended with true character.

Join The Greenest Expedition Fleet On Earth

With the launch of our two hybrid-powered ships, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, Hurtigruten has turned the page to a new chapter in advanced and sustainable discovery. Explore the world in maximum comfort with maximum care for the environment. These new ships have been designed for unforgettable expeditions. From the innovative hybrid engines that enable you to glide into pristine wilderness, to the elegant modern cabin furnishings, every detail is created with your adventure in mind.

Other ships in the Expedition fleet include: MS Fram, purpose-built for polar conditions and recently refurbished in 2020. MS Spitsbergen takes you closer to natural and cultural wonders of the Arctic due to its size and agility. Sustainability is the core of every detail of your Hurtigruten adventure. Hurtigruten is constantly pushing boundaries, and aims to become completely emission free. As the first cruise line in the world, Hurtigruten is permanently introducing biodiesel as fuel on a number of ships – including the 2020 newly refurbished MS Otto Sverdrup and MS Maud.

A Coastal Fleet full of character

Explore the coast of Norway aboard Hurtigruten’s collection of ships, replete with character and intimate touches that make sailing the waters of this region truly authentic and memorable. The fleet varies in size and age.

Each of the ships has wonderful restaurants, bars, cafes, observation decks and panorama lounges, but they also possess different styles and offer something truly unique. No matter which you choose, they all provide the same intimate travel experience, with their own informal Hurtigruten atmosphere.

The Cabins

When the temperature hovers around 20 degrees below outside, and the first few flecks of snow start to brush against the window, there’s nothing quite like reaching for a blanket and watching the world pass by. The Norwegians have a word for this: koselig. Pronounced ‘koosh-leek’, it captures everything comforting and wholesome, exactly like a blanket on a cold day. Similar to the Danish term, hygge, the joy of seeking comfort plays a significant role in Scandinavian interior design.

This unique approach has influenced every aspect of Hurtigruten’s luxurious expedition suites and cabins. From the blonde wood tones and the selection of furniture to the choice of lighting, everything is designed to soothe and soften. The sustainable cruise operator has also placed a premium on materials that celebrate the natural world to make its rooms warm and inviting.

The Food

On Expedition voyages, enjoy superb dining from locally and regionally-sourced produce, adding a delicious dimension to your travel. Whether you choose to dine in the main onboard restaurant or upgrade with the à la carte fine dining option, you’ll find the cuisine varied, inspired and downright delicious. The Lindstrøm dining room features classic Scandinavian design, modern art and premium comfort to set the mood. Enjoy a rotating menu of modern dishes that are inspired by the regions we explore, elegantly served and presented by our experienced staff. You can also dine at Aune, the ship’s main dining room that draws its name from a family of ship chandlers in Tromsø, who supplied some of the great polar explorers as they headed into the wilderness. Enjoy casual dining at Fredheim, an informal meeting place, where travellers from around the world share experiences, stories and food while scanning the horizon for wildlife.

Norwegian coastal voyages include Norway’s Coastal Kitchen concept. Our chefs make full use of the 34 ports we visit to receive deliveries of fresh produce from local suppliers, both coastal and inland, every single day. The chefs craft dishes that reflect the cuisine of the region the ship is sailing in, immersing you in the culture even more. A range of tempting plant-based dishes are integrated as essential options into all menus. Hurtigruten aims to be sustainable in all areas of operation. Through the Food Waste Project, the line aims to reduce food waste 20 percent by 2021. We embrace a holistic approach to creating delicious local food, using digital registration and real-time measurement to ensure your meals are truly sustainable.
